The Assembly Line

Finished and Unfinished Art By Cartoonist/Illustrator Len Peralta

Here is the final color for the Casey/Portal image.  Elapsed time from flat color to final product - about 90 minutes.
Here’s what I have learned on this phase of the pinup project:
1. I will always work fast.  My original plan was to work on this during my week off.  Instead, I dropped the flat color and did a pretty tight 600 dpi finished piece of art in about 2 hours.
2. If something is not working, move on to another aspect of the project. I was really struggling with how I wanted this project to look.  I was talking to my wife about it and I kept mentioning all these disparate artistic influences: Jim Lee. Fear Itself. Mignola. 50’s pinups. Tiki Art.  It was confusing to say the least.  When I was working on Veronica’s image, I wasn’t completely happy with how it was coming out.  For one, it felt too derivative of the piece I had drawn of Veronica for Geek A Week.  That particular image helped me set the tone for the rest of GAW and was a very pivotal image.  I didn’t want to rehash the look and that’s how I felt as I was working on V’s image.  I’ll go back and redraw hers because I want to be personally happy with how it turns out.
Luckily, moving over to Casey helped define what the pinup project will look like and it gives me a nice starting point.  She has such a unique look and I couldn’t help but be inspired looking at the photos of her.  I plan on drawing her again if she’ll let me.
It felt good to get this one done. I think I have an idea for my next image.  I may actually start that later tonight.
