The Assembly Line

Finished and Unfinished Art By Cartoonist/Illustrator Len Peralta

Here is the final painted Zoey pinup commission. This one was a lot of fun.  It felt like doing a Geek A Week portrait. Overall, very happy with how this came out. I hope the person who commissioned this is happy as well.  If you’d like to commission me for a geeky pinup portrait, use the Commission Me button at the top of this page.
More tomorrow!

Here is the final sketch of Clare Grant as Emma Frost.  I did a lot of work with colors and effects, trying to soften up the sketch as much as possible.  I’ll probably post another version with some brighter colors, but I sort of liked the washed out look of the image.  It’s not too different than other Emma Frost images which bothers me somewhat.  I have a feeling this will not be the last time I draw Emma (or Clare), so I’ll have some time to play around with it.
Off to enjoy the holiday weekend! More later.

Flat color added to the Clare Grant pinup.  Once I start adding the effects, shading and highlights, this drawing will really start coming alive.  It’s always amazing to me when that happens.  In other news, I am trying out the new SmudgeGuard on the recommendation of fellow artist, George Coghill.  I’ll probably post my thoughts later.

Behold!  The final colored image of Michele Boyd’s Snow White pinup. I think this took me around 2 hours to color. I had to stop and start on a few other projects, but that seems about right.
This would be a good time to remind everyone reading this blog that if you are enjoying the artwork process and you like my style AND you think you would like to hire me, that I am currently seeking new commissions. I’m trying not to be so shameless as to ask for the work (Apparently, a lot of people find that distasteful for some reason.  Everyone is trying to make a buck. Why not me?)  but I do make my living off my art. And my wife and family would be happy to see me doing something that I get paid for! I also do regular layouts and logos and such.  I thought I would just throw that out there. You know…that I’m available for jobs and whatnot. You can contact me here.
I’m moving onto the last Unicorn pinup later tonight or tomorrow - Clare Grant!  Woo-hoo.  Sketch coming soonish.

I added some flat color to the pencil sketch of Michele this afternoon.  I’d probably finish this tomorrow.  I forsee a lot of layers added to this file to get the desired effect I want. I’m interested to see how it turns out.  It’s been great saving these snapshots of the process as I go along. I sometimes forget how much work goes into these portraits.
In any event, back at it tomorrow.

Flat color added to Milynn’s sketch this morning.  I also added Kilala’s second tail, which I had forgotten in the original sketch. More in a bit…

I wish I had more time to work on this this morning, but I am up against the wall and simply have run out of time.  Overall, I like the feeling of it, but it’s not exactly the way I envisioned it.  I would have liked to done a monotone grayscale version (I still might) with some light colors on the costume.  I also would have liked to have worked longer on the pencil, just to clean up some of the sketch lines and such.  But in the end, the image became an exercise in Iron Artist (limited time to do what you can).
Regardless, I hope that Rileah likes it.  She is a gorgeous model and is fun to draw. Once again, I’d gladly draw her again if she will allow me.

Woke up wanting to get this Rileah piece done. Added the flat color to the drawing.  I’m going to go effects heavy on this one to give a painterly style. Because of that, the coloring was less precise than on Jessica’s piece. I want this to look really soft, so I’ll be covering up details and letting others show. Let’s see if I can pull it off.

I dropped flat color into Jessica’s drawing this morning. Something wasn’t clicking with me, so I tried changing the palette to resemble the Little Annie Fanny look a little more.  I don’t know how I feel about it.  Jessica is very light-skinned and having her turn close to orange doesn’t really jibe with her personality.  I’ll play around with it this morning some more as I add the effects and shadows to the file.

Today, I was able to carve out some time to do some flat color.  This was a quick pass, just to put some basic color onto the image.   I’ll go in and add the effects and shadow in the next pass.  It’s always amazing to me how the art comes alive when I start adding some simple shadow and glows.  More to come…
